January 22 is World Snow Day
Geneva, Switzerland, January 2012 –Sunday, January 22 marks the first ever World Snow Day.· Organized by the International Ski Federation, WSD aims to bring children aged between four and fourteen - together with their families - to the slopes, trails and tracks to enjoy a fun-filled day of events, activities and competitions on snow. The U.S. is one of 39 countries celebrating World Snow Day.
“There are a few venues celebrating World Snow Day, such as Crystal Mountain in Michigan”, said Mary Jo Tarallo, director for Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. “If anyone needs an excuse to go out and learn a snow sports then World Snow Day is it, even if a local venue is not officially participating.”
The WSD initiative falls under FIS's ‘Bring Children to the Snow’ campaign. Since its creation in 2007, this campaign celebrates winter sports as a fun, healthy and social recreation activity for children of all fitness levels and capabilities. World Snow Day 2012 will be the first event conducted on a global scale in order to join the world in a celebration of snow sports. It promotes a healthy lifestyle, and fosters global awareness of the importance of nurturing the natural environment.
Gian Franco Kasper, FIS President underlines the importance of World Snow for the sport of skiing: "Winter sports provide something for everyone, and we wish to foster a future generation of snow lovers. We hope that this enthusiasm will encourage many youngsters to take to the snow for the first time, and we congratulate those who already participate."
Countries currently participating include Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Kazakhstan, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and the United States, among others. The motto of World Snow Day is to Explore, Experience and Enjoy the snow. While World Snow Day is primarily geared for children and their families, people of all ages encouraged to participate.
