Venues From New England to N. Carolina Ready for January - Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month


Washington, DC – Winter 2013-14 - Snow is falling over the U.S. and the sixth year for Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month (LSSM) starts January 1, 2014. Ski and snowboard areas across the U. S. are offering special beginner learning deals - taught by professionals - during January for children and adults who want to learn how to ski or snowboard. Last year, more than 153,000 took advantage of the special offers. The web site provides more information.

Programs range from a couple of hours to an overnight. Most packages include a lift ticket, rentals and a beginner lesson. Offers vary from state to state. Saddleback: This Maine resort offers four miles of gentle learning terrain and a three for two ski or snowboard lessons/get the third free program for “adults: ages 13 and up. Purchase the first two lessons for $75 each and the third lesson is free. The customer chooses the days. The package includes a two-hour group lesson, rentals and a South Branch lift ticket. Butternut: The Massachusetts resort is jump-starting the season with an offer from opening day through December 20 – a $25 Learn To Ski or Snowboard Package. It’s the same package that regularly sells for $75. It includes a beginner area lift ticket for the day, a 1.5-hour special learn to group lesson and rental equipment. Information is available at

Butternut has a special deal for Season Pass holders only to - BRING A FRIEND to Learn To Ski or Learn to Snowboard Package. This package will be available most of the season when a season pass holder brings a friend to the mountain for a 1st Timers Learn to ski or snowboard package (Cost $50). Holiday restrictions apply

Wachusett: Just west of Boston, Wachusett’s Bring a Friend 4 Fun program offers a current skier or rider a lift ticket for the day and a beginner lesson for a friend for a total of $100. The beginner Learn to Turn package includes a lift ticket, rentals and lesson. Both lift tickets have to be used in the same day. Details at


Ski Vermont again is offering a $29 lift, lesson, rentals package at nearly all resorts that are members of the association. The offer is good throughout the month and additional details can be found at

Topnotch Resort And Spa: The Stowe, VT venue is offering a "Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month" lodging package starting at $278 per person, age 13 and older.

Holiday Valley Resort: The Ellicottville, NY resort is offering one-night and two-night versions of its Learn to ski and Snowboard Month lodging package Sunday thru Thursday. The one-night " LSSM First Time Beginners Lesson Package" is $283 per room, including tax, and the two-night "LSSM 1-2-3 Go Skiing Lesson Package" for $648, including tax.  The sample one-night package includes one night, midweek accommodations for two at the Inn at Holiday, Ski or snowboard rental equipment (skis/boots/pole or board/boots) for two, Two "First time" ski or snowboard group lessons, Two "Beginners area" lift tickets, Shuttle to Creekside Snow Sports School and Ellicottville's shops, galleries and restaurants, continental breakfast for two and more.

Ski Roundtop: Learn to Ski and Snowboard packages for ages 4 and older are $39.00 from opening day through December 24 and every Tuesday in January – a savings of up to 55%. New skiers and snowboarders can qualify for a Mountain Passport that entitles the holder to a complete package for their next visit, 40% off lift tickets and rentals for subsequent visits and one FREE class lesson per visit.” Go to

Whitetail: Whitetail is offering its First Class Learn to Ski and Snowboard and Mountain Passport Program as well as a First Timer's Guide to learn about all you need to know before hitting the slopes

Learn to Ski or Snowboard Packages for those ages eight and up are $39 every Wednesday the entire month of January! FREE Child Care is available with the purchase of a 'Learn To' Package! Learn to Ski & Board packages are valid for an all day beginner area lift ticket, rental equipment and a “First Time” lesson. No reservation is needed! Child Care is only available until 5pm. Reservations are required. Those who complete the First Time lesson are eligible for the Mountain Passport. Details at

Ski Liberty: Liberty has a similar offer but it is on Thursdays. Their FREE day care is called PlayCare* and is available with the purchase of a ‘Learn To’ Package! They offer a Mountain Passport option as well.

Also, for $90.00 per person, per night (taxes not included), guests age eight and up get one night lodging in the Liberty Hotel (minimum double occupancy), hot breakfast voucher for each guest, a full day lift ticket good on the learning area, ski or snowboard rental equipment - including men's, women's and kid's specific Burton Snowboard gear, and a one-hour class lesson on turning, stopping, and riding the lift.


Camelback: The $36 Learn to Package, online only at, includes one Open to Close Beginner Lift ticket, one Open to close equipment rental and 1 group lesson. The package is available throughout the month of January beginning January 2, 2014 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Lesson times are 10am, 2pm and 6pm. The only blackout day is Sunday, January 19, during MLK.

Shawnee Mountain: Shawnee kicks off its month-long promotion on Thursday, January 2nd with 100 introductory Learn to Ski or Snowboard Packages for the cost of $20 each. All proceeds from this one-day promotion will be donated to the Bushkill Outreach Program. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 570-421-7231 ext. 210. Some restrictions apply.

Montage: The resort is offering discounts of up to 50% on beginner learning packages. Adult ski and snowboard packages for those ages 11 and up are $35 and $0 for youths between the ages of 6 – 12. Lesson packages are available on Sundays, January 5, 12 and 26; Mondays, January 6, 13 and 27; and Tuesdays, January 7, 14, and 28. For specific times and additional details contact the mountain at

Jack Frost/Big Bounder: The two Poconos resorts are offering a Learn to Ski/Snowboard Package that includes lift lesson and rentals, Monday-Thursday during January excluding MLK Monday. The cost is $45 online and $65 at the window.

Big Bear: For Learn To Ski Month, Ski Big Bear will be highlighting the Ski Big Bear Learners' Permit.  This is a beginner program.  It will include a lift ticket, rental equipment and a group lesson for the Sundays in January excluding Martin Luther King Weekend Sunday (1/19/14).  The cost for aJunior Permit (ages 6-12) is $145 and an adult permit (ages 13 and above) is $165.

Big Bear also is offering its Book of Five private lessons for intermediate skiers and snowboarders.  The cost is $325.  The ages for our private lessons are 4 and above.  The Book of Five is good for one season and allows the skier/boarder to perfect their skills through five individual private lessons.


Massanutten: This Virginia Resort near Harrisonburg its Pathway Program - Save $20!

First-time Skiers and Snowboarders
Our Pathway Program is designed specifically for the first-time skier or snowboarder. Priced at $59 for a $20 savings. Minimum age is 7 years old. Participants progress through two separate one-hour coaching sessions on easiest terrain. The package includes a 4-hour Slope-use ticket, Equipment rental, and 2 one-hour coaching session .It is available January 6th 2013 through January 30th 2013 Monday through Thursday. Lesson Times

North Carolina:

Cataloochee:Working with Liftopia, Cataloochee is offering a $29 Lesson, Lift and Ski or Snowboard Rental every non-holiday Monday through Friday during the month of January.  The package price is a savings of over 65 percent off of the weekday rate. The resort also offers free beginner lessonswith all Cataloochee rentals any non-holiday Monday through Thursday. Pre-reserved groups of 15 or more receive free beginner lessons anytime with Cataloochee rentals, including weekends and holidays.

Ober Gatlinburg: Tennessee’s only resort has a weekday, non-holiday beginner skier special for $62.00 and a $68.00 beginner snowboarder special.
